world hopping: locked to [personal profile] athelstanthescribe
Outside Sonya's door, the Georgian summer heat would've struck them both in the face, as she said. The summer heat would've gone on until late October, and certainly would've been different than either Denmark, England or even millliways. A look up showed that the humidity was close to bringing in rain: sonya didn't think it would make the heat any better.
"This way." The buildings around them were basic, three-story and red brick. The barracks were nothing if not utilitarian, but they were nothing to look at unless they were home. Everywhere one looked, there were people in various army dress and the occasional civilian. Sonya deliberately put him as military though because only family of personnel or civilian occupations were allowed on base outside of Sunday, and blending in was easier than asking questions.
Every so often an enlisted would salute them. Sonya returned the gesture as they headed to her jeep. The bar itself was just some blocks away from the area, but she didn't want to put him through the strain.
"Inside,' She opened the door for him. "Normally it's within walking distances, better safe than sorry." Also, air-conditioning.

"How can you stand this all the time?"
no subject
And compared to all else, a little heat wasn't going to rattle her cage.
Only a few blocks away, they didn't really need seatbelts, but she'd been through 'accidents' before hand. Sonya strapped herself in and motioned to his own. "Take the strap on your right shoulder and buckle it in."
no subject
"Here?"
no subject
Adjusting the gears, she pulled out of the lot and turned to drive off. The idea of going on for a drive around the country side did suddenly come to mind, but she promised Athelstan a burger first and didn't feel it was right to deny just for a whim. "It's...just after two, so past the lunch rush. We might get lucky enough that Charlie could spare a moment to chat."
Otherwise he would be too busy dealing with customers.
Sonya made note to ask Athelstan later on if he wanted to just go around for a drive. The weather wasn't especially nice, but there was the novelty. "Anyone ever take you on a care ride before?"

Walking would've only taken them ten minutes, so the drive was even shorter. Sonya pulled into the driveway, being right in her assumption that due to the time, there weren't many cars around. This time of the day, most were on drills or briefing, and she herself had things to do, but taking her guest into consideration, it was nothing that couldn't wait.
"Here we are." She turned off the ignition. The building was the same red brick as all of them, the name 'Charlie's Bar and grill displayed on the sign.

She got out of the jeep. "Watch your step." She knew from experience how it was manuvering with crutches.
The interior of the bar was as any local dive bar: wooden and leather booths, bar top with drinks, along with pool table and dart boards. The only outward signs of it being on a military base was a framed American flag on the wall that was surrounded by pictures of soldiers and other souvenirs.
The actual bar itself wasn't entirely crowded at this point either, only a few people at the bar and a few seated at booths. Behind the bar was a woman with short, brown hair in a black, collard work shirt.

"Andrea." Sonya waved a greeting to the woman behind the bar, selecting for herself and Athelstan a pair of barstools. That the place was slow at the moment also meant Athelstan had an area to leave his crutches.
She waited until the woman came to their side of the bar. "Can I just have a coke.." she turned to Athelstan. "What'd you like to drink?"
If athelstan was a little overwhelmed by the selection, there was a blackboard in front with a few seasons brews for selection.
no subject
"Whichever beer you recommend", he says to Andrea with a slight smile.
no subject
Sonya watches as she pours them each a drink. "Yeah, two cheese burgers and fries, medium well."
The woman nodded, punching in the order on the POV system before serving them their drinks. Athelstan's is something called 'motorboat ale', extra bitter with citrus notes.
As they wait for their food. "This is actually a good place for breakfast too, mostly because few off base are aware breakfast is served here, so it's not so crowded."

"You mean here, or in general. Generally speaking, could be anything from toast, cereal, small pastries, eggs.." Really loaded question, and given her schedule and health, she'd had any number of them. "Here, Charlie's known for whipping up some awesome omelets with a side of homefries."
She made a mental note to deliver an order to him through Bar.

Which, neither of them were. "Also I've been promising you a burger for awhile."

Sonya turned to see not their server, but a heavyset man with shorn brown/grey hair. Dressed in workpants and white shirt, his expression in an easy one and carrying their plates, there's still evidence he could punch a man out if need be. "Lieutenant, heard you were bringing a fellow from overseas and had to see for myself."
He set the trayjack by their table and set the plates infront of them.
"Charlie, this Athelstan, he's in recovery before going back to the UK." There was an unspoken rule that you didn't discuss the 'how and why' unless prompted. "Athelstan..this is the guy you have to thank for my start in the army."
He held out his hand. "Pleasure to meet you."
no subject
"Likewise, sir. I've heard a lot about you."
no subject
"The time I spent kicking her skinny ass into shape-I would certainly hope so." Whatever strength he held back from Athelstan, he compensated by giving Sonya an especially hard slap on the back.
The slap was enough to nearly knock her over.
"Shouldn't you be taking orders in the office or kitchen?" Sonya didn't think he'd take this time to actually chat when he's working.
The man shrugged. "This time of the day, I put Enrique in charge of the kitchen. I just want to make sure you actually eat what you have infront of you."
Sonya hoped the lightening would cover the fact that she was blushing. Even after some time back home, she was still bearing signs of emaciation.

Manners not entirely played out here, Sonya took a few bites from her burger, still keeping an eye on them.
"Because there's this funny thing called fraternization that the army tends to frown on," She said, once having swallowed. "The two of us met at the clinic, and it's nice to talk with someone who's proper educated.."
This was sort of the truth. Athelstan was educated and they did meet at the clinic, just not for the first time and not on a military hospital.

He did motion to Athelstan's plate. "Eat before it gets cold." He cared less about education and more that soldiers (of any nationality) were being well fed.)
"I was telling him about your famous omelets ealier-" Charlie interrupted her. "Of which I'm still not telling you the recipe, I don't care how many times you ask."
no subject
"You don't want to pass on your secret?"
no subject
Sonya knew well enough from experience that that was all he was going to get for an answer. "The man runs his kitchen like a military operation..only instead of confidential military places, it's the recipes that are deemed private."
no subject
no subject
Sonya looked at Andrea with a pained expression. both she and Charlie were uncertain of her time in captivity, and even the mention of therapy gave her a knee-jerk reaction.
"I'm just hear for a burger, not a diagnosis."
"
no subject
"I hope she'll find the time to keep working here, then."
no subject
Sonya had to laugh at that. "Too many soldiers he wants to keep an eye on. I swear, during Bootcamp, he had some sick pleasure in pissing us off."
"Hey, got you ladies through the course, didn't it." His smirk showed no regret over the methods. "And...special forces."
He faced Athelstan and pointed to a second on the wall. Among the many photos was a picture of Sonya among a group of ten other men, all beaming and in green berets. "Picture right there is her graduation class from Specwar school, not ashamed to admit I point it out to all the former soldiers I trained."
Sonya suddenly found that her fries were extremely fascinating.
no subject
"You must be very proud of her", he says sincerely.
no subject
Sonya smiled back. "This is the local hangout for more than one reason." There were a lot of memories in this place: more why Sonya brought Athelstan here than just the burgers.
"And it's a living, so it works both ways for me."
he turned when someone got his attention. "You kids enjoy the rest of your meal, I gotta get back to the to the line."
He gave Sonya a shoulder squeeze before leaving the table.

no subject
"This is just a good place to talk, in general."
no subject
He follows her lead, finishing his burger.

She looked around a moment. Their booth wasn't exactly in a crowded part of the bar, but she still didn't want anyone to overhear.
"Word has it that he and his wife wanted a lot of kids, but sometime after they had Andrea, she developed cancer and the surgery left her unable to have anymore. Make matters worse, the cancer spread and treatment wasn't enough."
She left the rest unsaid, though he would've been able to get the rest. "This bar's their retirement plan, why he works so hard at it-and keeps his recipes under lock and key."
no subject
"Then Andrea and this place are all he has."
no subject
There couldn't be anything stronger then that. Sonya didn't used to believe in ghosts..now, she had a strange feeling such would be the case when his time came.
no subject
"I wouldn't doubt for a moment he can manage it."
no subject
The thought of Charlie passing away was a bitter one, but for once..Sonya could only smile about it. There was something about having reminders..souviners..that appealed to her as a soldier. "And his ghost will cause the jukebox to just play oldies so as to get on people's nerves."
no subject
no subject
Charlie wasn't a violent person, but she knew from his drill sergeant days that he could get a rise out of someone if he meant to.
The server and asked if they needed anything else: Sonya asked for the check.
no subject
"So where to next?"
no subject
She checked the time on her watch. "We have up to an hour before I need to get on with drills."
A drive wouldn't take that long, but better to tell him now just for a sense of time.
no subject
no subject
When the check arrived, she set the cash on the table along with extra for the tip. "Let's go."
no subject
"I'm at your disposal."
no subject
Much as she knew Athelstan was capalable of opening the door for himself, she still helped him inside before going into the drivers seat herself.
no subject
He appreciates it, since his hands still aren't fully healed, and settles comfortably into the passenger seat.
no subject
Driving by the gate, she stopped the car and waved to the guard standing by. He nodded and left their view, the gates opening a moment later.
Leaving the base, she finally turned to face him. "Feel like some music?"
no subject
no subject
"At the moment, depends on what's playing on the radio." Still eyeing the road, she reached for the knob to turn on the radio, frowning to herself as she turned stations. The bits of song and talk were indeed a lot of country music and gospel, and while she enjoyed country music when younger, now the rougher tunes appealed to her more.
Her hand stopped when she came to the familiar few notes of a song, smiling and instantly switching back to the right station and lowering the volume a little. At night she preferred 20s vocals and jazz, but during the day it was alternative and heavy metal.
"There we go.. 'enter sandman'. Song's a few years old, but I still like it."
no subject
"He has a pleasant voice", Athelstan decides, "even if I've never heard this style before."
no subject
Driving along, she was vaguely aware that her fingers were tapping along to the music even as she drove. Strangely enough the music seemed to fit along with the weather.
His remark made her smile. First Olivier and Ozzy Osbourne, now Athelstan and Metallica-she wasn't sure if she should feel proud or evil. "I once let Olivier listen to one of my Ozzy Osbourne albums-80s heavymetal, he liked it too."
She suddenly had the image of the two of them headbanging-he had the hair atleast.
no subject
no subject
"Some music groups in do have others write music for them, I know that much. Hard to say which though."
She wondered how she could get some of her newer albums onto the ipod.
no subject
no subject
Bullshit really. Metal of any sort could be depressing and make a person angry, but then sometimes that's what she needed. "There are a few artists who do exploit this sort of notion. The more shock value they add, the more people want to buy their albums."
no subject

The song faded on the radio, replaced by the voice of the dj for the timeslot. Outside the jeep, the sky was turning greyer and a few splashes of rain started splattering on the windshield. Sonya turned on the wipers before it started raining hard.

A commercial started playing on the radio when Sonya thought she saw someone in the distance with a car by the driveway. They were waving their arm and with this weather, it wasn't hard to guess why.
Sonya had a natural reserve against helping hitchhikers, but she got closer she noticed that the person wasn't just waving an arm-they only had one arm to wave.
"Okay, detour time-holy crap, think I know that woman." She slowed the car down to stop by the road. "Athelstan, see the knob on the side of the door, wind it down, will you so the window opens."
Stopping by the road, the woman by the road was indeed one-armed, but other than looking very wet she was otherwise uninjured. Her dress was civilian and casual. "Jesus...Laurie Walker..that you?"
Laurie nodded, that she recognized Sonya seemed inconsiquential to the chance to go inside. "Yeah, your car unlocked."
"Get in." The woman didn't need to be told twice and quickly got into the backseet.
no subject
"Your car is broken?" Athelstan asks, twisting to look at her.
no subject
The woman in question nodded, ringing out her hair. "Battery died, and then this rain before I could actually go anywhere for help."
"Where were you going?" Sonya looked at her through the rearview mirror. "Oh, this is Athelstan..visiting medic from overseas. Athelstan, this is Laurie Walker, we were roommates at the military academy."
"Hello..I was going to the base." She held up her hand, showing a wedding ring. "Guess the military stuck longer than I figured."
no subject
"Your husband is still serving? Or you as well?"
There are things she could do with one arm, he knows well enough.
no subject
"Hubbie's serving, not me. He's a paratrooper for Echo Company" She laughed. "The academy was enough military for me. I've been teaching elementary school kids for a few years now."
Sonya smiled. She hadn't changed much. "Perfect match then..both of you are crazy. I'll drive you over to base, don't worry."
no subject
no subject
"Which is why it's crazy to deal with it for a living." Sonya answered.
Laurie rolled her eyes, leaning forward to stick a hand infront of the vent. "So says the woman who deals in special ops. Give me stupid kiddie dares and 'homework excuses any day."
no subject
no subject
Laurie made an aside. "That crazines helped you get out of a jam on the '83 winter formal."
Finding an exit, Sonya finally turned the car around to go the direction of the base. "She's the one that gave me the 'pet brick'."
Hense the reputation.
no subject
"...I don't understand", Athelstan admits. "I remember the pet brick, but the winter formal...?"
no subject
"The winter formal was a dance they held every winter before break. High class event with formal wear and everything..guy I had a crush on invited me to it. At the time I didn't know it was just a mean prank."
"I lucked out of the whole thing by catching the flu." Their passenger interjected. Sonya only rolled her eyes and continued.
"Spent money on a dress only to find I couldn't go..wasn't proper to go without a date. So, paid a guy, sneaked in just long enough to punch the other guy out and make a run for it-and you know the rest with the brick."
In retrospect, the entire thing was a waste of time and money.
no subject
"That was cruel of him", Athelstan says quietly. "And uncalled for."
no subject
Laurie nodded. "One of the reasons I chose not to teach high schoolers. I'd have grey hair before my time."
She could see the base up ahead, only a little disappointed that their drive was cut short. "So, Laurie..there a reason you haven't kept in contact with me the past few years?"
"Yes, there is...you know how hard it is to find a mailing address overseas. Especially for Spec. Ops, and don't get me started on the cost of a phonecall."
Sonya was tempted to roll her eyes, but what she said was true on both accounts. "Point taken. I'll drive you over to charlie's, you can use his phone to contact the PX station and they'll direct you to where he'll be."
Much as Laurie was capable of it, Sonya wasn't about to have her walk around aimlessly in this weather.
no subject
"Are we not taking her home?" Athelstan asks, surprised. "I thought you lived here, Laurie?"
no subject
"I do, but if someone's willing to pay..." She looked at Sonya, who kept her eyes on the road. "I wouldn't say no to surprising him on the base either. We can get a ride home from one of the guys and still call a pick up for the car."
"Only because I consider you a friend." That's all she was going to say. "Though, I'm impressed you're able to drive at all."
Laurie grinned. "I know some people. They custom made a car where it's one hand on the wheel and lever by the breaks to switch gears."
no subject
[ooc: sorry, I thought she lived with her husband on base...]
"People can do wonders", Athelstan agrees. "But it's still quite impressive."
no subject
"It was either that or hitching rides when Cole's away." She gave her husband's name. "I prefer having some other means of independence."
Sonya couldn't argue with that. Much as her mom raised herself and her brother on her own, there was no way she could've done so without the help from neighbors and family..they couldn't have done it without family.
no subject
"Driving for yourself must be safer than hitching rides, as well", Athelstan says with a nod.
no subject
The base was up a head. Sonya made a mental note to trade contact information with Laurie: she couldn't believe she missed talking with her this much.
no subject
"Many telephone calls?" he guesses. "So easier, at least."
no subject
The sign showing the entrance of the base was up a head, the buildings even more of a giveaway. "Well, you're close by now, so there's that taken care of."
She looked at Athelstan. "Might as well get you back soon too, unless you want to spend a little longer around here."
no subject
"Is there anything more you'd like to show me?"
no subject
She chose to ignore the knowing look Laurie was giving them. "Now that you're in the states, we can exchange numbers, cool?"
"Deal." Sonya pulled into the base after signalling one of the guards. Inwardly, she wondered just how good of a job he was doing when he was reading a paper.
no subject
Athelstan nods to them both.
"Gladly. It's been nice to meet you, Laurie."
no subject
"You have a pad and paper on you?" Sonya parked the and reached for the glove compartment, pulling out a pan and paper and writing her number and email on it, as well as some money. "There you go."
Her friend did the same, holding the pad stead with her leg and tearing it off one handed. "And for you-thanks for the funds. I wasn't entirely serious about that."
"I was. Later.." She watched her get out of the jeep and tail it out from the rain into the tavern.
no subject
"I like your friend", Athelstan decides with a smile, watching her go. "But now she's gone - what happened to her arm?"
no subject
"Car accident when she was six years old. They tell you not to stick your hand out the window-living proof right there. She has a prosthetic arm too, but she sometimes finds it too much of a bother. Course, when we first met at the academy, her introduce was scaring the crap out of me with it."
She started the car and headed towards the living quarters.
no subject
"She was accepted into the academy after the accident happened?" he asks, surprised. "I thought it must have happened in her training."
no subject
"She's lacking an arm, but she's not stupid-she couldn't have been to get into here. All it meant was she couldn't participate during some of the phys ed classes."
no subject
"Those such as climbing?" Athelstan guesses. "She could learn to adjust her balance, but not build the strength of her arm that much."
no subject
She still did, but she'd toned down a little.
no subject
"And now she's a teacher", he says with a smile.
no subject
Sonya's not certain if that was from her own initiative or from the academy. "Halloween especially, that was her habit even when we were students."
She pulled up to living quarters, where she recalled the Door being.
no subject
"They're probably fascinated by it. Young children usually are, with no judgment."
They're the only ones in Wessex who don't make him panicky.
no subject
Kids were curious and they did like to poke, but unlike grown ups, there was nothing to be beyond curiosity.
She parked the car, looking around to make sure they could get inside without raising much attention. "Should be clear."
no subject
"Good." He smiles. "Will you come back in with me?"
no subject
"Have a briefing I need to be at in ten minutes, but in this case, sure."
She got out of the drivers seat and walked to the passenger side of the door. He seemed fine to walk on his own (especially now that he was in trousers and not a robe), but neither of them would appreciate a faceplant.
no subject
Especially not on gravel. He accepts her help getting out of the car.
"An interesting briefing?"
no subject
Which especially frustrated her. Much as she hated to do so, she had to keep silent about it. No one believed her and without proof even she wouldn't believe her.
She walked with him to the door leading to the common room, or it would be the common room door.
no subject
Athelstan nods.
"This is usually the place?"
no subject
Acting like they were just going in to play pool, Sonya opened the door for him to lead him inside. Instead of a large room with pool table, games and a few computers, the door opens to milliways instead.
no subject
He relaxes unconsciously at the sight of it.
"And here we are."
no subject
no subject
"I did", he promises. "It was good to meet some of your friends, and of course the famous food at Charlie's."
no subject
If she had to wait out an invasion, she'd rather it be with someone she was close to-and didn't have to compete with his schedule.
She walked in with him, closing the door behind them and re-entering Milliways.
