CHARACTER NAME: Sonya Blade
CHARACTER SERIES: Mortal Kombat

[OOC]

Backtagging: Yup.
Threadhopping: Ask first, but unless stated otherwise it shouldn't be a problem.
Fourthwalling: Not without discussion first. Sonya's had to face a lot in her career and probably wouldn't take too well to being part of a 'beat 'um' up game.
Offensive subjects (elaborate): Violence and combat are pretty much all of mortal kombat. That being said, if you have question relating, feel free to message me.

[IC]

Hugging this character: Depends, if she knows you and/or gives permission, she'd be fine with it. If not or it' sudden, be prepared for flinching at best and punching at worse.
Kissing this character: See above, but a  kiss on the mouth without permission will result in instant ass-kicking
Flirting with this character: You can certainly try, but whether she reciprocates or not isn't determined.
Fighting with this character: feel free, her entire career started off on fighting.
Injuring this character (include limits and severity): Please discuss firs
Killing this character: Yes, for the same reasons as above.
Using telepathy/mind reading abilities on this character: Again, discuss first, but please note Sonya won't take kindly to this in the end and will react either verbally or physically violent as a response.

Warnings: While I'll try to go easy on the violence, understand that Sonya's franchise and her career consist of heavy violence and injury. There's also possible mention of brainwashing and implied mental and emotional trauma.

How am I doing with Sonya's character? Too hard, too lax, is there something military I'm not getting right (bearing in mind that NRS tends to play fast and loose with military protocol and history). Please leave only constructive criticism or tips.

Instead of surviving, Sonya was killed in the battle against Outworld, killed and made into the corrupted dead, and a loyal follower to the fallen elder god Shinnok. Several years later, she and some of her 'fellow revenants' were returned to the living thanks to Raiden's magic-and Jackson Briggs delivering a sever beat down to the Necromancer Quan Chi who controlled them.

Her first year back, her close friends were near on suicide watch for her, knowing that what she did in the past, she had no control over. She retired from the army, unable to face the men who may've lost comrades while she was dead, unable to return to the institution after she tried to destroy the realm she once swore to protect.

More than once, Johnny had to make sure there were no guns around the condo, or risk not getting enough beauty sleep when the nightmares became too much.

When she became pregnant, everyone insisted that she seek therapy-she finally gave in.

Twenty-three years later, Sonya's earned a PhD in English with a focus on military history. Part therapy, part unable to completely brake off from her  background, she now works as a professor in a prominent military academy, teaching courses in The Art of War as well as War and Literature.

She's still married to Johnny Cage, still has nightmares of what happened, and could count on one hand the number of people she might talk about it with.. When Cassie entered the military, she found out through her husband, and nearly strangled him to death from the news. She's proud of her daughter, but after their shared ordeals, she can't help but be scared for her.

Sonya lead him through her door. While she said earlier that it was a garage, it was still military based, so it appeared more like a hangar then a normal garage, with its mix of civilian and various military grade vehicles. In truth, Sonya found her door on accident, having meant to walk down to Charlies as a way to pull away from the numerous duties still required of her. She could've grabbed a bite to eat at the Officer's Club, but that would've still left her open to being bothered by superiors.

Charlies was considered 'neutral territory' as far everyone was concerned. Though the man was retired, he hadn't lost the sense of command that came from knocking recruits into shape-he made it clear that business was to stay out of his bar.

"This way," She motioned him forward and towards her own jeep. "It'll be faster if we drive."

The idea came when, for reasons she couldn't understand,Milliways sent her a set of nail-polish and other tools for a mani/pedi. She hadn't had one done, ever, except when she was in her last trimester with Cassie and felt so fat and disconnected from herself that Johnny thought it would cheer her up.

Her door had appeared some weeks ago. The temptation to immediately walk through the door after bar tending was strong, but the rational side of her knew that once that happened, their relationship would have to be between officer and sergeant, not mother and daughter, and who knew what would happen after that.  This had to be in milliways.

She asked Bar for some dvds,  a few decorations, and..against her better judgement, some drinks and a few snacks. The thought of eating in the room made her flinch at the possible mess, but she wanted this to be just between them, and that meant being out from the main part of the tavern. They'd missed so much of that already back home.

Dixie was in the corner of her room. The cold never really seemed to agree with him, and while he seemed alright in the stables, she considered it a moment of weakness to let him in her room. He was still just up to her waist in height, small enough to spend time in her room.

Back in the tavern, her daughter would find a letter addressed to her from Sonya, inviting her to her room for an evening off.

If Sonya rolled her eyes any harder she'd swear they'd roll right out of her head. This whole situation with seeking shelter in the rain via a creep, old, dilapidated house was so cliche she wonder if this wasn't some prank from her Ex. This was made all the more better (or worse) but the company with her. Her only silverlining was that none of the men (least, she was assuming papyrus was male) were her enemies.

Ringing out her jacket (and trying not to shiver in the short sleeved sweater), Sonya tried to access the situation they were in: it was storming outside, bad enough that every other minute, thunder would rumble the house, old and dusty as this place was, it was dry. All they needed to do was set up the fire place in what Sonya could only guess was the sitting room and hopefully they'd be able to wait out the storm.

There was a part of her that also wanted to explore, but even she wasn't so 'genre blind' as to risk splitting up in this place. Even if this was just an empty house, no telling what sort of death traps there might be.  Still, they needed some sort of fuel for burning. All she had was some fluid and a way to start a fire, but nothing that wouldn't burn up instantly.

"Anyone want to come with me to find fuel for the fire?" It wasn't completely a question.

At some point in her life, Sonya was a special forces officer, married to a martial arts actor and between them they had one daughter. Balancing home life and the military was hardly easy, and Sonya would've been the first to admit it was always a challenge adjusting, but she would've never been one to complain.

Then there was the attack in Thailand,  but instead of dying, Sonya found herself picked by one of their informants-and changed into a vampire. She had no real way of knowing, but the creature's reason for allying himself with them required 'payment', a soldier he considered strong enough for him to sire another vampire before committing suicide.

To make matters worse, as a fledgling, Sonya's blood lust was still too strong to trust herself around humans-let alone her family.   Not wanting to put those she loved at risk, Sonya put herself in trust to the army, hoping they could find a way to keep her from harming the humans she's dedicated her life to protecting. In a decision that pains her to this day, Sonya let her family believe she was dead, erasing her status as an active member.

Now, instead of an active officer, Sonya's role in the military is a free-agent. using her new 'gifts' as informant and tracker. Once and awhile she'll track down and spy on her family, but after so long, she can't bring herself to face them and risk loosing control.

The sort of vampire Sonya's based on is roughly based on The vampire chronicles and the weaknesses and strengths that go along with their kind. Being in the army, she's been able to get a hold of extremely strong UV protection spray, while her army issued clothing is specifically made to block out UV light.

For feeding, Sonya prefers willing donors, and even then she'll keep a hip flask of blood and anti coagulants to keep the hunger at bay. Because she's still a relatively young vampire, the urge to hunt is still incredibly strong, and she'll often find more run down and crime ridden places to feed. Being in Spec. Ops, she's seen the worst of humanity and gets some sense of equilibrium when hunting down those who'd exploit and feed off those who can't defend themselves.

After discussing it with Ben (Cassie and Raiden mun) as well as Masqt (Kotal Kahn and Ermac),  and permission from the mods, I've decided to introduce General Sonya Blade into Milliways.

A few things to note,

This Sonya has never been to Milliways, and the events of the Outworld invasion have come around much more differently than the Sonya of the Original timeline, namely, of her allies, only herself and Johnny have survived. After the Outworld war, the Nether realm (Mortal Kombat's version of Hell) attacked, wishing to take advantage before Earthrealm could strength its armies. During the conflict, Sonya and Johnny had to face their former allies brought back as undead zombies, with Raiden's help, they were able to resurrect several of them, but at the time of Sonya's appearance, the rest are still enslaved by dark magic.

I'm using this line as a 'what-if' for Sonya if she hadn't found Milliways when she did. Surviving  two wars, two battles in Outworld that nearly cost her daughter's life have all taken their toll on Sonya's emotional and mental health. She's divorced from her husband of 20 some years, and while she does love her daughter, anti-fraternization and her own inner guilt have prevented  her from opening up emotionally in front of  her.

As of this thread, General Blade is aware of milliways, but as of yet has not been able  to enter the Bar. If your pup is a close friend or has made an impact on the Sonya from Milliways, General Blade will recognize them as in the case of a dream or de ja vue, but won't know their exact shared history.  Otherwise, all she'll know of milliways is the notes Cassie's given her.

The second war against the Netherrealm was less than a week ago, but so far, very few had time to relax. Outworld finally agreed to assist Earthrealm against the impending invasion, but only after a tense stand off and some smooth talking for the recently promoted Jacqueline Briggs. When it was over, Sonya thought she'd be able to break away and spend time with her family-as it turned out, Outworld had other plans. After the defeat of Shinnok, the Outworld Emperor had begun to think: while the realms would remain un-merged, it couldn't be denied that they were stronger as allies then when they stood alone.

And the sad thing was, Sonya found herself agreeing. Much as she hated to admit it, against other realm forces, they were stronger when they fought together.

That still didn't make this any less surreal. The emperor wasn't just proposing an alliance, but marriage-a political marriage, with her; one that would bind their armies and realms as allies. At fifty-one years old, and having already been married once, Sonya had stopped seeing marriage as pure romance, and if she were honest, the thought of one less enemy for Earth realm was too tempting not  to take up.

Which was what lead them all here, a party/conference room in a high scale Japanese restaurant, their party consisting of Secretary Blake and other high military leaders, while the Outworld party was of Ermac and others on Kotal Kahn's council. There was no denying that they all wanted some stability between the two realms, especially after so much conflict, but Outworld did threaten Earth. There had to be negotiations, compensations and assurances.

Dressed in her army dress greens, Sonya toyed with a piece of tuna with her chopsticks. In the near thirty years of military service, her years battling against Outworld, she never thought she'd live to see something like this. However way this meeting went, Sonya knew her own life would be changed: the implications killing whatever appetite she had left.
soldier_blade: (30-not liking this)
There was a stack of papers on the coffee table that Sonya needed to grade. Since earning a doctorate in pre-modern warfare and becoming a professor, she was pretty prompt about grading and keeping track of grades (something that both annoyed and relieved her students at the same time), but today wasn't one of those days.

Instead, she was sitting out on the deck of her and John's condo, watching people enjoy the late afternoon on Venice beach. Tomorrow would've marked the 23rd Anniversary of the end of the Netherrealm war, and 25 years since she'd been pulled back from that literal hell. A month ago, she and John received an invitation to a memorial service to remember those lost, but she couldn't bring herself to accept, not even after all this time, it was still too painful. Once and awhile Jax called her on advice to deal with the Outworld Civil war, but that was as close as she was willing to broach the subject.

She wasn't sure what was worse: the difficulty of coping with what happened, or the residual anger of dragging Johnny and Cassie with her while she couldn't fight off her own demons. She had the sort of life any woman would kill for, but years of therapy couldn't erase the self doubt of what she'd done to deserve them.

The deck was her favorite place to meditate; the white noise a welcomed distraction. Rumor had it that the current emperor would make an appearance at the memorial service, and she wasn't sure how she felt about that. In the first few years of therapy, John was always on tender-hooks when the possibility of a trigger made an appearance, and anything to do with Outworld was certainly one of those. Even if the symptoms were more manageable now, the three of them were still careful. Even when Cassie joined the army, John didn't tell her until it was already official, and the deal done.

She looked at her watch. Those papers weren't going to grade themselves, but that meant going inside, and she wasn't quiet ready for that just yet.

When they left the reservation, Sonya and those from home had already been on the run for a week: hiding and gaining allies. If she appeared calm, it was only from training and forcing herself to remain so.

All they had to do was find a portal: easy enough. They had a massive army after them, so it was a matter of marching out towards the direction of the city an waiting until a portal made itself known. Yet even then there were dangers: the dry heat meant they had to stop mid day, finding shelter in the occasion cave or by some rocks for shade, one or two of them keeping watch. Every so often a winged, reptilian creature flew by, another sign of the merger.

Several hours in and their luck changed. A portal opened, a platoon of tarkatans came raging out. The fighting started and Sonya felt the world turn red, almost welcoming the fight as she tore through the enemy. A blast of heat alerted her to Liu Kang's fire, burning the closer tarkatan warriors while Kung Lao threw his hat to cut off the rest of the mutants: the metal edge of the rim was more than decoration, and sharp enough to slice off several heads before returning. A shout from Jax and it was into the portal they all went.

This wasn't the first time Sonya traveled by portal, but she could never find herself getting used to it. The feeling of charged energy, the rush of wind, the experience was like being sucked through a whirlpool and being spat out again.  She was on her guard the instant the fight began, and it was just as well.

On the otherside of the portal was the city the Kahn had stationed his armies. Another time would've had her identify the city as Chicago, but right now, she could only identify the place as hell. All around them, civilians were trying to hide while the National Guard were trying and failing to hold off the enemy.

They didn't have time to look before a herd of centaurs came at them, forcing the group to split up.

"Shit!" She heard Jax over the noice. "The fuck did these creeps get missile launchers!?!"

Sonya let out a curse and dove for cover behind a crashed vehicle. Jax was right: somehow or another, Outworld had gotten a hold of modern artillery and using it against them. She reached for her own rifle and held it up: she'd only meant to use the rifle as an emergency, now it seemed like a stroke of luck that she brought them instead.

"Remember! Aim for the heads!" She called out before firing.

ooc: tagging free for all. Will have the kombatants interspersed with tags, but let it be known in the actual thread who'd you like to be paired with.

soldier_blade: (3-Kombatant/soldier)
She lead the group through her door, leading to the interior of an adobe structured room,  furnished with several sofas, woven rugs and various shelves, with a fireplace at the far end of the room. Even in the dry heat, the fire was still burning, providing a dull sort of light when the electric light on the ceiling was turned off.

The room was by no means empty of people either. Sonya introduced them, choosing to ignore the strange looks her allies gave her. "Everyone, this is Liu Kang, Johnny Cage, Kung Lao, my commanding officer, Major Jackson Briggs, and Nightwolf. Guys, these are the friends I told you could help us. The men with us don't speak English except through the headsets you see them wearing.." She reached into the box she had with her and pulled out several more, handing one to Jax, Liu Kang and Nightwolf so they could be understood, explaining their purpose. In the event they were split up, she wanted the others to be able to direct them as well.

They were minutes to an invasion and she didn't want to waste time with introductions. Jax atleast seemed to understand: he knew better than anyone how difficult it was for her to trust someone as an ally, so she hoped he understood how serious this was.

Nightwolf set the headset in place and nodded. He was seated by the fire, a quiver of arrows by his feet. At first glance, they appeared normal, but Sonya noticed earlier that whenever the light shone on them from a certain angle, they emitted a greenish sort of glow. "Have you explained to them what we're fighting against?" The shaman addressed Sonya, but seemed to speak to her other allies as well: she answered in the positive, before he set a map on the table and invited the others to sit around it.

"The gods have shown me where the Kahn has placed his fortress. " He pointed to an area on the map, connected it to where they were a tthe present time. "Under normal circumstances, it would take days to travel by car, but without knowing it, the Emperor's invasion has given us a tool as well. The same sorcery that's created the portals in the first place, we can use to transport us to the city where he's set up his fortress."

Sonya frowned, an expression shared by her commanding officer.  As far as they were both aware, creating portals took a lot of energy, and if one of them, especially the one who was the closest they had to a sorcerer, was too drained to go on, that would leave them one man short: on the other hand, they didn't have much of a choice either.

The Shaman continued, explaining the rest of the plan a second time, before motioning that it was time to go. "The land we're standing on is sacred to my people, and thus far we've been protected by Kahn's sorcery. That protection leaves as soon as we step over its boundries."

Jax continued from there, clicking his headset to make sure the others understood. "Everyone take what weapons you can handle,  along with essential food and water. Once we've reached the outer territory, keep your eyes open, and if it doesn't look human, shoot..or aim to kill." The second part was aimed to some of the warriors with axes and swords. "Let's go."

The talk of the Outer territory would become obvious as soon as they reached it. Whereas the land around Nightwolf's home had sounds of life, and the sky a usual blue color and cloudy, it seemed that they passed through a fogged barrier, that the sounds of birds had gone, and the sky itself an erie yellow, not sunset but..dead, as though the very life were being drained from the realm. Being that they were in the country, there were few people around to begin with, but in the distance, Sonya could see smoke..and she knew the sound of screaming when she heard it, far off as they were.

Sonya pushed the sick feeling back down, steeling her expression before making sure the others were following her and headed forward. They had a job to do: emotions could wait until later.

soldier_blade: (3-Kombatant/soldier)
Finding rifles for everyone was trickier even for milliways. She couldn't smuggle them from the armory without being noticed, but if she was going to have warriors aid them in their fight, she owed it to them to atleast get them familiar with modern weapons. In the end, she actually signed an agreement with Bar: she would be permitted weapons, but only if they would be used outside, and only with blank rounds.

That was how she and the other found themselves outside, each person with their own rifle and lined up in front of targets. Emergency or not, she had no intentions of anyone shooting themselves or someone else in the foot over this: soon as they were instructed on how to load and reload their rifles, it was on to safety.

"First rule of handling any firearm," Having given them all ear plugs to muffle the sounds of rifle fire, Sonya spoke loud to be understood. "Always assume your rifle or gun is loaded, even when not. Don't ever point the muzzle at anything you don't want destroyed, and don't put your finger on the trigger unless you're getting ready to shoot something. And finally, always be sure of your target and what's beyond it. You'll be shooting at moving targets, miss the target or hit a non fatal area, there's the risk of a round passing through and hitting one of us instead of the enemy."

This was why they were having target practice in the first place. Better now than learning on the fly.

Sonya lined herself up with the rest of her 'students'. "Line the butt and stock of the rifle just infront of your dominant shoulder, line the muzzle right at your target, finger on the trigger. On count of three, take a deep breath, and pull the trigger..one, two, three."

ooc; threat as a party thread and feel free to thread with others learning.
soldier_blade: (30-equipment check)
A quick look through the door and Sonya led the two of them outside. Stopping immediately, she looked down at herself, letting out a relieved breath with she found herself back in her BDUS:

"Thank fucking god, I'm back to normal." late summer was still fairly warm in North Carolina, and the army tunic was never fun to wear in summer at all, but at this point she could hardly bring herself to care.

Fort Brag itself was full of men and woman in various states of military and civilian clothing. Parked around were a few cars and jeeps, with most of the buildings made from red brick.  Another time and she would've liked to give Ragnar a proper tour, recalling from Athelstan how he enjoyed exploring: now wasn't the time..

"This way..'" Her norse was on the level of a small child, but it would serve for awhile.

She lead him towards a building some feet away. Ragnar's clothing and braid drawing attention, but thankfully most of the other officers and enlisted seemed to have other destinations in mind. To say nothing that they all knew Sonya as an officer that didn't mess around: a enlisted greeted her with a salute, which she returned with a nod, but that was the most they dealt with.

soldier_blade: (Default)
Outside Sonya's door, the Georgian summer heat would've struck them both in the face, as she said. The summer heat would've gone on until late October, and certainly would've been different than either Denmark, England or even millliways. A look up showed that the humidity was close to bringing in rain: sonya didn't think it would make the heat any better.

"This way." The buildings around them were basic, three-story and red brick. The barracks were nothing if not utilitarian, but they were nothing to look at unless they were home. Everywhere one looked, there were people in various army dress and the occasional civilian. Sonya deliberately put him as military though because only family of personnel or civilian occupations were allowed on base outside of Sunday, and blending in was easier than asking questions.

Every so often an enlisted would salute them. Sonya returned the gesture as they headed to her jeep. The bar itself was just some blocks away from the area, but she didn't want to put him through the strain.

"Inside,' She opened the door for him. "Normally it's within walking distances, better safe than sorry." Also, air-conditioning.
soldier_blade: (Default)
For the AU plot, Sonya's going through as if hers and Raiden's ending from the Alternative 2011 storyline actually happened.

At the end of the Outworld invasion, nearly all of Sonya's friends and loved ones are killed in the resulting war. The pain and loss is such that she retires from the Army to try and cope with her grief, wanting nothing more to deal with Outworld. In this timeline, Sonya looses her father at a very young age, but at this point, she finds herself visited by his ghost, who urges her to fight on: even with the Emperor killed, his armies still linger and Sonya is one of the few to fight them off. She essentially turns into a sort of vigilante, hunting down Outworld warriors and earning money by selling parts for science and participating in underground cage matches.

Sonya being able to see her father's ghost is a result of her receiving a part of the thunder god's soul, divided into four parts and sent to four warriors. Given her status as one of the few remaining Earth warriors, it only makes sense that Sonya's one of his chosen. Having a fragment of Raiden's soul allows her to see/communicate with earth bound souls/ghosts that want to make themselves known, such as her father,  while also giving her increased speed and strength, and more control to manipulate her chi.

Sonya's still haunted by what's happened in her past, and while having her dad around helps, she still suffers from nightmares, outbursts, and moments of depersonalization. Urged by her father, she's seeing help, but it's sporadic and only on a 'must needs' basis. She still visits Johnny on occasion, but she's not settled into finding a steady place to live. At some point, she wants to get her life back, but not in the near future.

Her father's ghost will remain with her in milliways. For the most part, he won't be visible to anyone, but those extra sensitive will feel that there's someone else besides her while those with the ability to see/talk with the dead will be able to see a wispy figure of a 20/30ish year old man in an old fashioned military fatigues. He won't otherwise make his presence known except by a cold feeling around her, and making objects move if he feels to make a point.
