Aug. 20th, 2017 09:30 pm Instead of surviving, Sonya was killed in the battle against Outworld, killed and made into the corrupted dead, and a loyal follower to the fallen elder god Shinnok. Several years later, she and some of her 'fellow revenants' were returned to the living thanks to Raiden's magic-and Jackson Briggs delivering a sever beat down to the Necromancer Quan Chi who controlled them.
Her first year back, her close friends were near on suicide watch for her, knowing that what she did in the past, she had no control over. She retired from the army, unable to face the men who may've lost comrades while she was dead, unable to return to the institution after she tried to destroy the realm she once swore to protect.
More than once, Johnny had to make sure there were no guns around the condo, or risk not getting enough beauty sleep when the nightmares became too much.
When she became pregnant, everyone insisted that she seek therapy-she finally gave in.
Twenty-three years later, Sonya's earned a PhD in English with a focus on military history. Part therapy, part unable to completely brake off from her background, she now works as a professor in a prominent military academy, teaching courses in The Art of War as well as War and Literature.
She's still married to Johnny Cage, still has nightmares of what happened, and could count on one hand the number of people she might talk about it with.. When Cassie entered the military, she found out through her husband, and nearly strangled him to death from the news. She's proud of her daughter, but after their shared ordeals, she can't help but be scared for her.
